My new favorite is a website www.goodreads.com that allows you to track books that you've read, rate them, track recommendations and books on your to read list. It is taking my reading hobby to a new level. One of the cool features is that it provides the text for my update. This weekend it was James Patterson's novel Sundays at Tiffany's, that I believe got passed along from my Dad and Aunt Leslie.
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Sundays at Tiffany's was very different from other James Patterson novels, and I really enjoyed the change. While the plot is somewhat unbelievable, I think that is what makes it magical.
I love when that happens.

I got a phone call this weekend from my sister Abby. Her teacher cancelled clinicals on Thursday and Friday because she is going to a conference. Abby already has Wednesdays off this semester, and is playing hookie on Tuesday to get up here early. All of a sudden, I went from not seeing my sister until Christmas to having a week together. I. AM. SO. EXCITED.

Doody and Layne are really great men. They are giving up their time with their spouse, their money (because Abby and I are students with no income), and their reward points (Thank you Southwest!) so that their wives can have some quality time together. I am so appreciative, and I feel so loved.

There is nothing like time with your sister, especially with a sister like Abby. She's like a fresh whirlwind that blows through your life and leaves everything for the better.

Lucky me.Mitzihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02736244463629491580noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1610892901155504914.post-24985098301922002492010-10-07T12:53:00.000-05:002010-10-07T12:53:39.419-05:00A $40 Co-PayThe best investment I made this week was a $40 co-pay to the City Doc Urgent Clinic. I was told I had acute sinusitis and acute bronchitis. I got a breathing treatment, a steroid shot, and an antibiotic shot. I got a script for a Z-PAC and another steroid pill. And an inhaler. And I feel A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

Only Layne came home from a work trip last night and sounded like I did a week and a half ago. Lesson learned. Layne is going bring his co-pay to the doctor tomorrow...Mitzihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02736244463629491580noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1610892901155504914.post-76301660343949856992010-10-07T12:20:00.000-05:002010-10-07T12:20:01.312-05:00The Coupon QueenInstead of working on a school assignment that is due by 11:30pm tonight, I decided to procrastinate a little more by jumping on the blog to tell you about my new, self-proclaimed title, the coupon queen.

Don't get me wrong, I know there are people who are better at this than I am. There are more tricks for me to figure out. But in this household, I am running the grocery scene...and have started to master the art of it.

I've come along way. When I first started dating Layne, a trip to the grocery story together never ended well. I had no process, I just did my thing. Layne had a routine as to how he approached grocery shopping, and he didn't deviate. CLASH. I have this ingrained habit from when I was child of holding on to the side of the cart. I distinctly remember Abby and Gregory in a grocery cart with Stephen and I holding on to the side and mom pushing us in a cart and pulling the groceries behind her. (How she did this I'll never know.) Without realizing it, I still hold onto the side of the cart all of the time. It drove Layne nuts. CLASH. We've figured out how to go to the grocery together since then, but I will always look at those beginning days and laugh.

Now I am the one who has a specific approach about the grocery store, and it starts with my grocery list. It is so easy to go to the store for 12 things and come home with 20. I find myself buying extra things- things I want but don't need, or things I will use just not right away. Rarely are they on sale, and rarely do I have the right coupon. So the first step for me is to commit to my grocery list. Like anything in life, there are exceptions. But the conscious commitment to sticking to the list goes a long way.

Next, I compare my list with the weekly flyers. If you don't get the paper on Wednesdays and Sundays, look online. All of the grocery stores I use post them, and there is more information about other store discounts as well. After looking over the ads, it was obvious that Kroger was the right place for me to go this week. The last thing to do was to look through coupons and see if I had everything. The world of printable online coupons has really made a difference in the way I approach grocery shopping. I now list what I need, and find the coupon to match it. And you would be surprised how easy that is to do. Yesterday, I was able to find $1 off of the milk we use, and $0.75 off of my creamer. Finding coupons for our essentials is the best, and in total I used fifteen coupons last night.

My favorite steals of the day: 12 pack of coke zero and sprite zero $2.00, my Herbal Essences shampoo $1.45, Yoplait Frozen Smoothies $1.54, Kraft sliced cheese $0.89, Oscar Meyer Deli Meat $1.09, and my Quaker Rice Cakes $1.19

Was it worth it? Look at these savings and you tell me.

Manufacturer's Coupons (that I brought in) - $9.95
Bonus Coupon (I held my bread off to the side and used the coupon to pay for it) - $1.50
Kroger Plus Savings (why I chose to go to Kroger, they had sales on my items) -$27.41

Total Savings- $38.86 (29%)

I invested about an hour of my time to prep. And keep in mind that I'm grocery shopping for Weight Watchers as well, so I was able to find steals and deals on the specific items I need to eat healthy. Totally worth it.Mitzihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02736244463629491580noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1610892901155504914.post-52889068451109733382010-10-04T16:39:00.000-05:002010-10-04T16:39:14.424-05:00Meet Miss VivianThis past weekend, Layne and I drove up to Bloomington, Illinois, to see his cousin Keith get married. We had a great time with our extended family, and cherish the times when we can together with his cousins. While we were in town, we had some quality time with Chad (Keith's older brother) and his wife Monica, and their two children Braden and Vivian. Vivian just turned one this week, and we were able to watch her learn to walk in front of our eyes.

As most of you know, our mom is five a year survivor. It's a cause we believe strongly in because it hits close to home. My favorite month of NFL football is October, and it's all because of Think Pink movement that has swept over the league.

Some people think it is stupid to see pink football cleats, or even better, the pink ribbon Tracy Porter had shaved and died into his head. But I think it is an an example of people at their finest. An increase in breast cancer awareness saves lives, and I am proud to be apart of an organization that has made an amazing effort in the fight.

See, in 1999, my sorority (Zeta Tau Alpha) partnered up with Tanya Snyder.... the wife of Dan Synder... who owns the Washington Redskins. Who is also a survivor. In 1999, the the Redskins were the only football team who participated. Local Zeta chapters showed up to pass out pink ribbons at FedEx field. Now, almost every team participates. Special towels... special hats... special cleats... you've seen it for yourself.

Like the ladies say... real men wear pink. And although there are those few of those few who don't think pink should be on the football field, it does its job. You remember. And awareness is half the battle.

So wear pink this month. You could save someones mother, daughter, sister, and wife. I know I sure am thankful who led the way for my mom... and it's time to pay it forward.

P.S. - I collect Yoplait pink lids, and if you save them I will be responsible for getting them from you and turning them in. Maybe we can't change the world ourselves, but together we can make a difference.
Mitzihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02736244463629491580noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1610892901155504914.post-36305833939377177442010-09-29T12:14:00.004-05:002010-09-29T12:24:20.027-05:00Layne's Been ReplacedThe seasons have started to change, which means one thing for those of you like me: sinus infection. It happens twice a year, when we change from summer to fall and from winter to spring, like clockwork, for as long as I can remember. Lucky for me though, my old best friend Layne introduced to my new best friend, my Neti Pot. Yes honey, you have been temporarily replaced by a $10 CVS purchase. And while the Neti Pot will never be able to love me and provide for me the way you do (trust me, I do know you are AMAZING), you will never be able to flush out my naval cavities. Gravity and saline solution round out my amazing foursome. Together, I can breathe through my noise. I can smell if something is burning, and I think I'm starting to be able to taste again. Thank God for good company...Mitzihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02736244463629491580noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1610892901155504914.post-84098093231779277032010-09-29T11:14:00.003-05:002010-09-29T12:11:57.651-05:00Junior League Bus Trip 2010
In college, bus trips meant a date, a costume, too much to drink- due to the consumption of too many shots. Post college, I don't think it really changed- a date (Layne), a costume (tacky Christmas sweater), and too much to drink. Enough said. But bus trips have now taken on a new meaning...

This past weekend, I spent my Saturday on my Junior League Provisional Bus Tour. It's a mandatory event for our provisional year, and it was WONDERFUL! The purpose of the bus tour is to introduce the new members of the Junior League to several of the organizations that the Junior League donates both their time and money to. We left headquarters right after 8am with caffeine in hand, and got done about 2:30. In between, I caught up with friends, met some new ones, we snacked, lunched, and visited four great organizations. I can't wait to share what we learned.

Living downtown has changed the way I see some things. We are definitely exposed to the homeless population in Dallas differently than I ever have been before. When is the last time you saw a panhandler on McKinney Ave. uptown? So the first stop definitely resonated with me the most-The Stewpot. It's located 2-3 blocks away from our loft on Park Avenue, so it will be easy for me to get to (I'm determined to make service a priority in life), and I was blown away by the services they provide. Did you know that the majority of the homeless in Dallas are women and children? How terrible is that? To think of children that are Addison, Reece and Grace's age on the street is disturbing, and motivating. The Stewpot is doing everything they can, and then some. Here are a few fun facts: Case managers and medical and dental staff are meeting the needs of over 500 of our homeless friends each week. The Stewpot's Second Chance Cafe at the Bridge has served more than 1,500,000 meals since May of 2008. And most importantly (in my mind) The Stewpot is host to 400 inner city kids in year round programs. Computer classes, art classes, bible studies, ESL classes.... the list goes on and on. The Stewpot is focused on helping people help themselves to get of of the streets and start living a new life. I can't wait to get involved.

Our second stop was off in East Dallas, at the main campus for East Dallas Community Schools. The first school was est. in 1978 in East Dallas, with a second campus at Lindsley Park in 1999, and a third at Bachman Lake in 2009. EDCS believes that all children, regardless of ethnicity or income, can succeed in school when they start young and involve parents. (Parents start meeting with the school during the pregnancy, and school starts at 13 months.) Their mission: to provide an outstanding education to culturally and economically diverse groups of children from primarily low-income families during the first nine years of life. (The program ends with 3rd grade.) Despite the fact that EDCS was awarded Gold Performance acknowledgements in both reading and math by the State of Texas, and despite the fact that that the EDCS charter school was rated exemplary, this is the statistic that nails it down: In contrast to the local high school graduation rate of less than 50% in the neighborhood, EDCS third grade alumni graduate high school at a rate of 94%, with 88% of those graduates attending college. This really was unlike any learning environment I've ever been exposed to, and I thought it was brilliant.

Our third stop was at the Senior Source, a nursing home for the elderly. I'll be honest- I don't like hospitals and I don't like nursing/ old-folks homes. I miss my grandparents enough as it is, and going back to a place like that makes me miss them even more. BUT... I believe it is important for someone to spend the end of life in dignity, and while it's important that people focus on the youth of our nation, the elderly should be just as much of a priority. The Senior Source was one of thirteen projects that provisionals could pick for their 20 hour service projects this year (mine is putting on Reptile week at the Museum of Nature and Science), and so far they've done a great job. Two weekends ago, they made a "wall of honor" and included pictures of every resident in the home that served this country in their lifetime. It was beautiful. The residents love it, and supposedly it's started all kinds conversations between the house mates. And check out this statistic- more than 50% of the residents at the home we visited have never had a visitor. PERIOD. They deserve more, and it's empowering to know that we can give it to them. So aside from regular volunteers who visit the home each month, the Junior League is also responsible for the biggest social event of the month. Different themes, different plans... same place, same great time. Just walking through the facility lit up smiles on peoples faces.

And finally, our trip ended at the Ronald McDonald House. Some people were really familiar with this organization, but I was not. The House is 60,000 square feet and has 60 guest rooms including six suites for families who have special needs due to a transplant, chemotherapy, or an immune suppressed system. The house serves as a " home away from home" for families of seriously ill children who are hospitalized or receiving treatment in area hospitals. The Ronald McDonald House in Dallas opened in 1981 and has served over 25,000 families. They just recently moved into a new facility by Children's Hospital which has doubled their capacity. No one is ever turned away due to inability to pay, although they ask for a $15/day donation. The House operates at an average 91% occupancy rate, and is dependent upon the community to stay open. There are more than 100 regular weekly volunteers, and over 300 cooking team volunteers who provide three meals a day for families. 94% of the funding needed to sustain the House comes from individual and corporate donors, community organizations, and special events.

Later this year, I'll get to select my placement for next year. It'll be a 60 hour volunteer commitment to the organization of my choice that the Junior League works with. I missed TOAT last week because of our vacation in Mexico, definitely not due to a lack of things to be thankful for. I am so blessed, and focusing on those blessings really makes life easier to handle. No point in waiting, let's get started!
19.) I love living around the corner for the library, and enjoy my weekly visits. Before we left for Mexico, Layne and I took a walk over to check out a few books for our trip. It was a nice walk, and I had fun with Layne in the library. Let's be honest though, when do I not enjoy the library? I am so thankful to have the library at my disposal- it's my favorite activity when I want to relax.

20.) My office is my home office, and there are a limited number of people to bump into at the water cooler. The way I keep my sanity? My friend Colin. I enjoy his show, even when I disagree with him. I think he's funny and witty, and I enjoy our time together between 9am-Noon.

21.) All I can say is that love is something beautiful. It's like magic. There is nothing better than to see your friends find their soul mate, and I know Layne enjoyed seeing one of his best friends from college commit herself to the person who makes her whole. I am thankful for love, because it warms my heart. It fills me with hope. It reminds me of what is important in life. I love going check the mail box, and can't wait to see what was sent. My mom sends me clippings from the newspaper, magazine articles, wedding programs... everything and anything that keeps me connected to New Orleans. And my sissy, well, she sends short, sweet, and simple notes (usually with a treat, like some stationary, or M shaped post-it notes) that remind you she is always right there with me, no matter how far apart or busy we are. I'm only taking two classes this semester, Economics and Decision Solving. My decision solving class is a handful. Seriously- I called Layne minutes after I bought it, panicking, because I thought it was written in a different language. I took a lot of time, and it took patience and work, but I did it. I've got a 95 in Econ and a 90 in DSCI after the first go round. I'm now confident in my ability to manage these classes throughout the semester.

25) I'm thankful for Collins Tuohy and the JLD

This week I was able to go hear Collins Tuohy, real-life sister of Michael Oher from The Blind Side, speak at a Junior League general membership meeting. What a great speaker! The Junior League's focus is to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women, and improve the community, and I think Collins touched upon each of those in her own way. She shared intimate stories of her relationship with Michael, like the time she asked him to help move her from her dorm room to the Kappa Delta sorority house, and he showed up with the entire offensive line. They were personal, and I enjoyed learning more about the real Tuohy/Oher family. The thing I love about the JLD is the women- there is something empowering about developing relationships with amazing women and working together on something bigger than ourselves. I'm so blessed to have this outlet in my life.

26.) The parade ground is filled with people. Tents are popping up. The RVs are pulling into the lot across from CEBA (it will never be the Patrick Taylor building to me). Fall and football season are upon us, and it doesn't get any better in Baton Rouge than this. I work a College Fair this week, as a volunteer for LSU, and spent a few hours sharing my love for the university, and thinking about what it's done for me. Yesterday, Chris was promoted to Aircraft Commander in the United States Air Force. I have so much respect for this man who has given so much of his time and effort to guarantee our freedom. I have seen first-hand how challenging it can be to give up months at a time with his wife, and to be stationed overseas during football season. So this week, I am giving special thanks to all the men, women, and their families- who serve without question so that I may be free. This mans entire career is a gift to us, and a day doesn't go by where I don't give thanks for the gift the Martinez family gives. You guys deserve those military discounts everywhere! All in all, it was a success.

18.) Summer Semester Grades

I believe in giving thanks for my grades, and giving thanks for the ability to focus and concentrate. Mind over matter can be a constant battle around here, so I give thanks for a God who is good, who is loving, and who is always by my side. Knowing those things alone gives me strength. I finished the semester with a 3.5 GPA, and finished three pre-reqs for the MBA program (Business Law, Marketing, and Financial and Managerial Accounting). The new semester just started, and I'm taking an MBA level Marketing class along with my Econ pre-req. We didn't go out of town, we didn't do anything ridiculous (okay- maybe we did!), she was just surrounded by the people who love her and mean the most to her. That's what matters... and we definitely had a good time to show for it.

Sharon is a friend of Layne's from college. She dated his roommate for awhile, and then she and Layne were the only two to move to Dallas post Aggie Land. We've enjoyed her friendship, and I LOVE her husband-to-be. (They're a match made in heaven.) Layne and I are excited for them both, and are looking forward to being on the beach in Cancun, Mexico when we tie the knot next weekend!

We started the morning off right with mimosas!

Believe it or not, this is the first vineyard I've ever been to...

All of us got in the grape stomping pit for a picture!

I did this once, and am glad to get it off the bucket list. We did this a few years ago when my Uncle Paul D and Aunt Cindy got married, and it was an amazing time. When I found out that Abby was going without Doody, I jumped at the chance to go too. When was the last time Abby and I had days to hang out with Layne and Doody around? I love our men, but I love good sister time too.

We had a great time at sea, and we had a great time in Mexico. Here's Mom and I hanging out in the shade. It's official- I have Reynolds skin. I am going to burn bad. So the best answer I came up with is the shade. Lucky for me mom and Uncle Paul D were flanking my sides. And of course we got primo seating- everyone else were just a few feet away catching rays.

Special shout out to my dad who participated in the Hairy Man Contest and has a nice, shiny, medal to prove it! You're moves were impressive dad and you made us proud. Did anyone buy the cruise video with it on film? I have got to get a copy of that to show my kids one day.
Aunt Cindy and I found our way to Bingo games. Of course we didn't win, but we sure had fun playing.

And wouldn't you know, the cruise casino had my very favorite slot machine ever... The Frog Prince. My grandparents took me to the casino to play the slot machines for my twenty-first birthday, and this was one of their favorites. As you can see, it's something special to several us, and we could often be found sitting at that one machine. I put $10 in when I started playing, and I took $10.14 out when I was done at the end of the weekend. That's what I call hours of free entertainment!

And of course, the views (and the desserts) were amazing. We didn't see any of the effects of the oil spill, but my parents did get to see what the offshore oilfield environment looked like. I was really excited for my parents to get to see where I worked and what it entailed, and it meant more to me than I thought it would.

I love being on the water. Working offshore got me in a rhythm of seeing the sunrise and sunset over the gulf, and there is something peaceful and relaxing about it. It was nice to have that feeling rush back over me. It was hard though, to look out upon the open water and think about the friends who have been lost at sea. Being there made the situation all the more real, and it definitely tugged at my heart.

Mitzihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02736244463629491580noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1610892901155504914.post-15380473877933791172010-08-24T18:46:00.002-05:002010-08-24T18:53:45.675-05:00ALC Catamaran Cruise
Another event this summer was Layne's ALC Year End Catamaran cruise. Brina's birthday was well over a month ago. But I'm behind on blogging everything and am determined to share pictures and catch up. We had a wonderful night to celebrate Brina's Birthday in downtown McKinney. The Maywald's had parents night out, and while I love the minis it is always nice to spend time with just Christine and Chad. We tried out this great tapas restaurant, and just all snacked on an amazing variety of food. Unfortunately, my mind has blanked. Where were we?

And I was excited to get new pics of the adults in the fam.

Christine and Chad

The Birthday Girl Brina and Scott

Layne and I

Hope you had a wonderful birthday Sabrina! Claire is my younger cousin and McQ is my sorority sister and college roommate. I cannot express how much these two women have shaped me into who I am today, or how thankful I am for their influence. McQ is a friend who has become a part of our family- Abby calls her for advice, and Gregory has already told me she's invited to his wedding. Our parents have become friends, and still take advantage off opportunities to spend time together when we're both in town. And while Claire is my younger cousin, we don't have to be friends. We don't have to be close as adults, but I am so thankful we are. And to top it off, McQ and Claire even share a special relationship with each other. I just makes life so nice.

12. My Nieces (Sorry Lucy- Doody's Black Lab- only the non-furry variety today)
Addison and Reece just light up our lives. They are Christine and Chad's girls, and they have our hearts in the palm of their hands. Addison definitely looks like Christine's side of the family (The Anderson side- Mrs. Carmen's family) and Reece looks just like a Maywald. We love playing with our little angels, seeing their art projects and work from school. I leave listening to Reece read me a book, or watching a classic Disney movie with a bowl of popcorn to share. I love seeing them grow up- it's amazing how much more comfortable they have become in the pool over the summer. And I CAN NOT BELIEVE Reece is starting 1st grade. When I met her in 2006, she had just turned three. She didn't really make much sense then, but boy has that changed. And Addison wasn't even around when I met Layne. The first time I met Christine, she was 8 months pregnant. I love, love, love, our minis... and hope there will be many more in the future. (No pressure Brina & Scott, Abby & Doody.... and definitely no pressure Steve Eaux or Gerald)

13. My Aimes

And I can call her "my Aimes," because I'm the only one that spells it like that. I don't know why I've never taken to the Ames everyone else has, but there is no point in switching now. It's ingrained. First, a very Happy Birthday wish to my Old Maid Aimes! (She's actually 3 months younger than I am, which is why I love to tease her about growing up. I don't think I'm going to like hitting 30 first!) Amy shared the most beautiful quote with me the other day. "Like branches of a tree we grow in different directions, but our roots remain as one." Most people can't understand what it's like to have a friend that was there the day you were born. We don't know life without each other. From selling girl scout cookies to tennis leagues, playing against each other for the playgrounds and grammar schools, to first kisses and drivers ed... the good, the bad, and everything in between... we've been there and done it. And while we've gone our own ways and done our own things, it's nice to know that what we have can never be taken away. It's too much of a part of who we are.

14. KRLD Restaurant Week

Last night Layne and I went on a date to Dallas Chop House. It's a steakhouse downtown in walking distance of our loft- and I surprised Layne with a reservation there for Restaurant Week. I love restaurant week! It allows us to try out some of the best restaurants in Dallas for a great deal. $35 will get you a three course meal at the restaurant of your choice, $7 of which goes to charity. It's fun to hear where other people are going, and I love how the food critic comes out in each of us. The Chop House was okay- definitely not a top five steakhouse in town. But it's our steakhouse, and we enjoyed walking over and strolling through downtown. It was a wonderful date night, and can wait to hear results from other friends.

15. The Junior League

I know I mentioned this earlier in the week, but I am so thankful to be apart of the league. I have already met amazing women, and I can't wait to get involved in the community. My next meeting is in September, and our guest speaker will be Collins Tuoy (sp?) from "The Blind Side." Sports and the Junior League? Who would have thought? This could be H-E-A-V-E-N.

That's it for Thankful on a Thursday this week. I hope your weekend is full of blessings that bring a smile on your face- and that you can find time to give thanks for those things too! You can't truly feel joy if you've never felt heartbreak. You can't really know what it's like to be filled unless you've been empty." -Kelly Cutrone

I saw this quote on facebook this week. Heather Huth sent it to Amy Armstrong, and it made my heart break... because it's true. If I could, I would have done anything to take the pain away from both of them. Two of my closest friends, two of my oldest friends... I hate that they have to carry around the baggage that they do. No one should lose a sibling so early in life. But the truth is that by the time someone is in their late twenties, almost all of us have something we're carrying around. I just consider myself lucky to have them there. Without saying words, those two know exactly what to say and do to bring a smile on my face. Our last girls trip was to Fort Lauderdale in April, but we're due again. It's been a tough spring/summer. So what do we have slated for the Fall? NEW YORK CITY! I know I can't take away their hurt, just like they can't deal with mine for me.... but just being together makes all the difference.

(Thank GOD Layne understands that!)Mitzihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02736244463629491580noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1610892901155504914.post-10663845422823376912010-08-17T13:15:00.003-05:002010-08-17T13:42:25.721-05:00Life is Good. So good...There is no way I will be able to blog about this weekend without sounding like a giddy little school girl, but I guess that is what happens when your heart is filled with joy.

For years now, I have prayed for a group of friends to call my own- not that Layne and I didn't have amazing friends before, because we do... but they weren't my own. There wasn't anyone I connected with on a "girl crush" level. No girlfriend that I could not only talk to everyday, but see as well. No one can replace the relationships I've established in my life to date, but I have wanted something more for so long. And I finally found it. It's crazy how life works. Layne's college roommate for 3 years is his best bud, Nick Holmes. Nick dated Sharon for a few years in college, and Sharon and Layne were the only two to move to Dallas post college. Now Sharon is getting married in September, and Layne and I are looking forward to the destination wedding at the Excellence Playa Mujeres.

Throughout all these wedding activities, I met a girl named Arundel Belll, who Sharon met through the Junior League. More on that in a bit. Arundel is the friend I spent so long praying for. Layne and I met her at a shower for Sharon and Brandon. I watched Layne and Arundel talk for 45 minutes before I interrupted them. When she walked away, Layne told me he just met the most interesting person he has ever met. I didn't believe him, but now I understand why. Arundel and I couldn't be more different, but I love our friendship. We both accept and cherish each other for who we are. No need to put on a face or fake a smile, no judgement. Next to Layne, Arundel was my biggest supporter when it came to school. She never failed to call and see how a big project or test went. When I'm not feeling like myself, she is there. What she doesn't understand, she figures out. And when I need an outfit, she is the first one to help me get it organized. It is such an incredibly blessing, and she has just as amazing of a relationship with Layne. I love hearing them laugh and cut up together.

Through Arundel, we've made some great friends. Alti and Bella live across the street from us in the Dallas Power & Light Building. Alti is best friends with Kevin who married Liz who is best friends with Arundel from childhood. We have walked into an amazing group of friends who we mesh so well with. We're constantly doing impromptu dinners during the week, and I'm amazed at how many people can get comfy in our tiny loft.

And on top of that, my Junior League provisional year has officially started. I went on an overnight retreat on Saturday/Sunday, and it was the most fun I have had in Dallas in years. The whole event was all based on getting to know people- and I had a blast. It was so easy to be myself, and it felt so good to be accepted for just being me. I met several girls who are going to be volunteering with me at the Museum of Nature and Science later this year. (I signed up to put on an event called Reptile Week. I bet you can't wait for more details about that!) I know this organization is right for me. I love the people, I love service aspect, and I love that I'm going to grow into a better person as a result of it all. Tonight I have a provisional meeting, and then I'm going out for dinner and drinks with some new girlfriends I met this weekend.

What can I say? Life is good, and I thank God for that everyday. The sun doesn't always shine. Sometimes you have to dance in the rain and hold on to hope like it's all you have left. But the clouds have passed over us right now, and we're living it up as much as we can. It's amazing what you can find at the end of the rainbow.Mitzihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02736244463629491580noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1610892901155504914.post-16328080660554484992010-08-12T15:02:00.006-05:002010-08-12T15:45:20.579-05:00Thankful on A Thursday

I have come to love Thursdays now. I look forward to sharing and giving thanks for all of the blessings in my life- large and small. This week is no different.

7.) I'm thankful for a family that is musically inclined, and that my family's passion has been passed on to me.
Tonight I'm off to the theater to see DCI 2010: Big, Loud & Live 7. DCI (drum corps international) is a group of professional marching bands that travel throughout the season performing across the country, and then culminates in a World Championship. The music is amazing. Their movements are precise. It's technical, challenging, and a pleasure to watch. We were fortunate to see several corps perform when we were kids, and I'm excited about tonight. I may be flying solo in Dallas, but it's fun to know my family will be watching the same thing at the same time as me.

8.) I love College Football live.
Seriously- it's a half and hour of heaven everyday. Today, Texas A&M received some serious praise- the best passing attack in the Big 12. And everyone agreed, Texas A&M will beat OU at Kyle Field this year, marking the rise of the Mike Sherman era at A&M. I'll be honest, it gave me goosebumps. I feel like good things are in store for our Aggies, and we're getting pumped. And while there are lots of things to be said about LSU, that may be better on another post. :)

9.) I always have. And as a result, I'm a little mother hen. I always want to make sure my siblings are okay. Their happiness is so important to me. I want them to celebrate life, to live and love to the fullest. Their joy is my joy- and that is what I love about family. So to see my sister with Dustin, well... it's one of the most beautiful things in the whole world. Dustin is an amazing man. His character is upstanding. Gregory said it best- the world needs more men like Doody. I love Doody like I love my brothers. I love the way he loves my sister, and I love the way he loves our family. I am SO thankful for our Doody. There is no one else I'd rather have for a brother -in-law. Even though we've only been together four years, Layne has done an amazing job of checking out New Orleans like a local would. So when we landed 1:30 later than planned and options for dinner were limited, Camellia Grill came to mind. And once we figured Layne was a first timer, it was a must. Abby met us there around 11pm, and we let Layne enjoy the fine dining experience. When Camellia Grill re-opened after Hurricane Katrina, it became a special symbol of the rebirth and rebuilding of the city. Yes, the temperature often rises above 100 degrees. Yes, you are going to get a sunburn if you stand in the sun. It's hot. It's uncomfortable. But it is bearable- just find some shade.

New Orleans gave me an attitude adjustment. You walk outside, your glasses fog up. You immediately begin to sweat. And it doesn't stop. It'll be 10pm and you are still sweating just like it was 3pm. In the sun or in the shade, it doesn't matter. The humidity is everywhere.

Don't get me wrong, I love Nola, and I accept it for steam bath that it is. But it sure did make me happy to come back to Dallas in August.... 100+degree weather and all.Mitzihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02736244463629491580noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1610892901155504914.post-61858248521957027772010-08-11T18:20:00.006-05:002010-08-11T18:41:35.230-05:00Zach's 30th Party BoatWhat better way to start the summer than a day on Lake Travis with your best friends from college? We don't get together often enough.

Mitzihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02736244463629491580noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1610892901155504914.post-28967877718339685472010-08-05T10:24:00.002-05:002010-08-05T10:43:32.841-05:00

Thankful on a Thursday is back again, and this week it down to the basics.

6.)Going Home to New Orleans

One of the best feelings in the world is waking up in the morning on a day I am going "home." Although Dallas is where Layne and I choose to be, New Orleans will always represent home in some way, because home is where the heart is. And in case you haven't noticed- a big piece of both of our hearts is there.Mitzihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02736244463629491580noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1610892901155504914.post-79866402069605633842010-07-29T00:14:00.003-05:002010-07-29T00:47:33.692-05:00Thankful on A ThursdayI have a friend from high school named Gini, and although we haven't kept over the years, I found her blog and I love it. I love her financially savy coupon trifecta tips, and more importantly, I love Thursday. So much, that I wanted to bring Thankful on a Thursday to you. I think this is a beautiful thing that I am really going to enjoy. So in no particular order...

">

1.) I am thankful for my sisters.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUzEWk7qFLO_LUsF6FYxXCUbg-MFBHkXRPU0fZPPFsbgpItcjPtWiu5lwh-C2MUVfwSOPge37RdB4BpZI-nHeJHfFSxjrhfXvcL1ER5UIaBTWv1nFMojgUGJT0pgtPRrDtVkO9i6i2-rrx/s400/DSCN1229.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499196329842665042" />
I have one sister in a league of her own, but I have multiple others who consistantly change my world for the better. I love that we stay close though we may be far, and I never doubt that you'll be there in my moment of need. I am truly blessed for each one of you.

2.)Faith, Family, Friends
It's such a simple statement, but it holds so much meaning in my life. It's our family motto, an exclamation of our top priorities. I reflect on it daily, and it keeps me gounded in our roots.

3.)My Husband and Best Friend Layne.
I don't know if it's worth attempting to explain. The man may not be perfect, but he is completely perfect for me.

4.)I love being in school... For Real.
I have really loved being a sudent, and I am so thankful for everyone's love and support. It has meant the world to Layne and I as we make these transitions in our life. We love haveing you with us on the ride...

5.)My Account Test Grade
I studied all on Thursday. Student all day Friday until 7pm Birthday dinner for Erol. Saturday- all day. 12+ hours. All worth it- got my highest grade yet on a test!

Looking forward to sharing more next Thursday...Mitzihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02736244463629491580noreply@blogger.com0
